While Jim Sowell Construction Company had debt-financed the entire subdivision of 72 acres, the first group of lots closed by the builders paid off the development loan. |
Forest Lake Addition

1980’s Completed Projects
This decade was one of growing diversity for the types of real estate in which Jim Sowell Construction Company participated. 1990’s Completed Projects
In the 1990’s, the potential for Jim Sowell Construction Company’s real estate activities reached full fruition. Having a depth of resources, the company was well positioned to prosper from the opportunities afforded by the banking and savings and loan crises, including capitalizing on dispositions made by the RTC, FDIC and financial institutions during this time. In this decade alone, the company purchased 2,694 developed and partially developed lots and 4,280 acres in Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin, Houston, San Antonio and Denver, Colorado. In addition, another 3,200 lots were developed or completed.

Sowell & Co. used its experience in land development to work with many local, state, and federal agencies to create the 230-acre Grand Lakes Business Park. The project required moving 2,500,000 cubic yards of dirt, which exposed a valuable aggregate deposit that offset the cost of the flood plain reclamation. Working with local, state and federal transportation agencies, Sowell & Co. built the first frontage road on Interstate 30 in Grand Prairie. The development has added over $165 million in new development to Grand Prairie. |
